The Governor’s Resolution on Brain Health

According to a recent report to congress, the prevalence of Alzheimer’s in Utah is now projected to increase by 127% in the next 15 years, making our state number one in the US for increase risk for Alzheimer’s. As a result on April 14th Governor Herbert signed a joint resolution with the Utah Legislature to fight the spread of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in Utah. In their resolution they encourage the adoption of “a brain-healthy lifestyle” to reduce the risk for these disorders.
Research over the past decade has shown that, although we do not yet have a cure for Alzheimer’s we do know a great deal about how to prevent it. Therefore, according to Nick Zullo, programs manager for the Utah Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, the new focus “is really the early stage person or even the person undiagnosed.” As this is when a real difference in brain health can be made. Because the disease process for Alzheimer’s, and other dementia's may begin more than 20 years prior to life disruptions, it’s important that each of us take action now, while we are still thinking clear, to adopt a brain-healthy lifestyle. But what does this lifestyle consist of.
In their resolution our elected officials go on to note, that according to research compiled by the Alzheimer’s Association, a brain-healthy lifestyle, should include, “proper nutrition, appropriate exercise, cognitive activity, and social engagement.” Indeed these four things have been shown in repeated studies to make a real difference in brain health.
For example, in a new study out of Columbia University, comparing the diets of more than 2,140 people, they found that a diet rich in certain fruits and vegetables, fish, poultry, nuts and olive oil, omega-3’s, and B-vitamins, and low in the bad fats found in red meat, fried and hydrogenated oils, may reduce the risk for Alzheimer’s by at least 40%. If you add the right kind of supplements as contained in EZPAK you may reduce your risk even further. According to Dr. Yian Gu, one of the Columbia researchers, “Diet is probably the easiest way to modify disease risk.”
Moderate exercise has also been shown to reduce risk by more than 50%, and some feel regular mental activity involving reading and remembering, as well as frequent social interaction, like that provided at Senior Centers, may be even more protective. And of course, a combination of these is best.
Have you heard these suggestions before? If so, how are you doing? Is your diet primarily made of fresh vegetables or fried or processed foods? Are you taking a good supplement? Are you getting the exercise, sunlight and social interaction you need? Are you regularly learning new things?
